Arizona backyard flocks — heat, dust, desert feed
How many more birds have to die in your Arizona heat before you talk to someone who actually keeps flocks here?
The call most desert flock owners don’t know exists: a specialist raising birds in this climate every single day — on the phone with you, handing you the exact steps. Not a forum. Not a guess.
Work with the specialist — $500 to $5,000 Just have a question? Start free
In 5 years we’ve personally helped 4,000+ Arizona families raise 50,000+ chicks and 10,000+ pullets. Every booking puts chicks in the hands of a 4-H kid down the road.
Came here to buy chickens? Smart to start with the desert. Getting the birds is the easy part — keeping them alive through an Arizona summer is where most flocks fail. That’s the part we do.
Which one are you living right now?
- It’s 6 PM and still 114°. The hen you refilled ice water for four times a day is dead in the run — and last night your spouse asked, “is this even worth it?”
- The box that should’ve been chirping was silent. You want to try again, and you’re terrified to.
- It’s 2 AM, the fourth night this week reading forum threads that flatly contradict each other. It’s $500 on animals your kids will name.
- You started with six. Now eight of your “pullets” are roosters crowing at 5 AM and the HOA has sent two letters.
So you Google it, you post in the Facebook group, you wait. Twelve answers come back — four contradict each other, three are wrong, two are for a completely different climate. They’re guessing. And you can feel it.
There’s a different way: put the specialist on the phone.
Someone who keeps flocks in your exact climate, who can hear what’s happening with your birds — your setup, your heat, your feed — and help you understand what you’re seeing, what’s likely driving it, and what to do about it. You don’t research. You don’t guess. We hand you the steps. Fast.
The information is free. My time isn’t. You’ve read the blogs and watched the videos — but they’re written for a general backyard chicken, not for 115° and desert dust. Almost no one knows your climate — and that’s the whole game out here. What you’re paying for is expert time applying what actually works in this heat to your birds.
Meet the mentor.
I’m Colwyn Wickersham. A flock of six hens in the east Valley operates completely differently than a forty-bird run on the west side: same state, different world. The goal, the housing, the feed, the soil, the heat, the water, the rooster — it all intersects. If you don’t know what you’re looking at, it all looks the same. I know what I’m looking at. Most vets rarely work with chickens; a vet visit runs $1,000+ and often ends with no answer. This is the call that actually gives you one.

Four ways in, plus the commercial tier. Every one of them is expert time on your flock from someone who keeps birds in this same heat, and every one includes the Desert Flock Field Guide. At the two upper tiers, the birds come with it.
★ 1:1 Flock Protection — $5,000
Only 20 partner families per year
Not a program — a relationship, and a direct line. I already know your flock before the phone rings: your goal, housing, climate zone, feed, breed mix, and history. Season-long, you get your custom written flock plan, quarterly check-in calls so we stay ahead of each season, up to 3 urgent call-when-needed sessions, your birds included, and first priority on the calendar, always.
Apply for 1:1 Flock Protection
Not ready for the season-long commitment? → 1:1 Flock Expert Guidance is the same expert time, solved once, for $2,000.
1:1 Flock Expert Guidance — $2,000
Solve it once, and walk away with the plan in your hand. You send photos of the coop, run, waterers, and your feed labels first, so the call isn’t spent gathering basics. Then a private deep-dive, and your written flock plan within 2 business days: breed fit, housing and shade, water and ventilation, the feed and supplement schedule with actual amounts, and a season-by-season calendar for your zone. Plus a follow-up call at 6 weeks, six weeks of business-hours email support, and a group of birds included — so you leave with the plan and the flock to run it on.
Flock Emergency Call — $1,000
Something wrong right now? A same-day 1:1 call during operating hours — the fastest real answer you can get. We work through your birds, coop, run, water, and feed until we find what’s actually driving the losses. You get your written action items the same day, and a follow-up check-in call within 7 days to confirm it held.
For an acute medical emergency, also contact a licensed avian vet — we support husbandry and management, not medical treatment.
Flock Workshop — $500
The desert fundamentals, taught live with other Arizona keepers in the room: a group session on summer water and ventilation, shade and coop siting, protein and feed for hot-climate laying, and which breeds actually hold up down here — with live Q&A on your own setup, so bring photos. The least expensive way to get real desert answers from someone who keeps birds in this heat.
Commercial & Large-Scale — from $42,000
For hatcheries, ranches, and operations where birds are the business. A full operational assessment, a custom operational and nutrition plan built for your scale, quarterly reviews, team training on desert husbandry and heat management, and dedicated access when issues hit. Application only, limited intake each cohort.
Want the birds on their own? Once a month.
One release a month — limited seats
We don’t run a bird catalog. Apart from the flocks that come with the upper tiers, there is exactly one way to get chicks from us: the Desert Flock. Ten sexed, desert-proven chicks out of stock we’ve bred through six Arizona summers, $500 with free shipping, a 48-hour live-arrival guarantee, and the Desert Flock Field Guide included.
We open one release a month and the seats are limited on purpose. We’d rather set up a small number of flocks properly than sell a lot of birds to people who haven’t thought it through. Live birds also only travel once the highs drop under 90.
Our guarantees.
- Clarity Guarantee: when we hang up, you’ll know what’s happening, what to do first, and why — or we keep talking until you do.
- Live-arrival guarantee: every bird covered for 48 hours on the trip to your door.
- We can’t guarantee every bird survives. We guarantee you’ll never make a blind decision about your flock again.
Twenty partners a year. That’s the cap.
The partnership only works if the attention is real. Calendar priority runs Protection → Expert Guidance → Emergency Call → Workshop.

Every session you book puts chicks in the hands of a 4-H kid down the road or a K–2 classroom two towns over. Not a charity line item — a name, an address, a flock that wouldn’t exist otherwise.

Most desert flock questions are already answered, for free, in our Arizona flock guides — heat stroke, monsoon prep, heat-hardy breeds, water and ventilation. Start there: no cost, no call, no form. Want the whole desert playbook in one place, written for the low desert instead of a general backyard? That’s the Desert Flock Field Guide — and it’s included free with every service above.
