Welsummer Hens - Hardy Dutch Heritage Breed

Welsummers are a hardy, easygoing breed originally from the Netherlands, prized for their rich reddish-brown eggs with distinct speckles. These birds are not only beautiful in appearance but also consistent layers with friendly personalities. With their balanced temperament and striking feather patterns, Welsummers are a smart and stylish addition to any backyard flock.

Physical Features and Traits

  • Appearance: Hens have golden hackles, partridge-patterned reddish-brown bodies, and black tail feathers. Roosters are even more vibrant, with mahogany and green-sheened plumage.

  • Egg Production: Lays 160–250 large terra-cotta brown eggs with speckles annually.

  • Size: Hens average 6 lbs; roosters 7 lbs.

  • Hardiness: Well-suited to a variety of climates; handles heat and cold with ease.

Why Choose Welsummers?

These hens are reliable layers and wonderful free-rangers, thriving in pasture and backyard setups alike. Their eggs are highly marketable due to the signature speckling, and their temperament makes them great for families or mixed flocks. They're alert without being flighty — the perfect blend of beauty and utility.

Key Features:

  • Rich, speckled eggs with natural terracotta tones

  • Excellent foragers with a calm, alert disposition

  • Low-maintenance and climate-hardy breed

  • Adds color and variety to your egg basket

  • Balanced temperament: not aggressive, not timid

Welsummer hens are an ideal pick for those who want gorgeous birds and equally beautiful eggs. Whether you're selling at a market or collecting eggs at home, they bring visual appeal and solid performance to any coop.

Breed Info & FAQ
Fluffy white chick on a white background

Can I add an extended warranty after placing my order?

Yes, extended coverage such as GritShieldâ„¢ can usually be added as long as your birds have not shipped yet, so contact support promptly if you decide you want extra protection. Once birds are in transit, new warranty add-ons are limited availability.

Can I get baby chicks via local Arizona pickup instead of shipping?

Baby chicks are not offered for Arizona meetup pickup because all chick hatching and early brooding is concentrated at our Texas farm for safety and year-round logistics. If you prefer not to ship day-olds, consider ordering pullets or older hens for local pickup, or hatching eggs if you want to incubate at home instead.

Can I visit your farm or pick out birds in person?

For biosecurity reasons we do not offer public farm tours or in-person selection of breeding stock, because a single outside disease introduction can threaten entire flocks. Instead, we share photos, education, and detailed guidance online and through partners so you can see how birds are raised without compromising flock health.
